About Us

There's just something about having in front of you a simple plate of velvety fresh spaghetti, married to the wafting aromas and flavors of a deep-hued house-made bolognese sauce, and soft, powdery parmesan table cheese, that puts you in a heavenly place.

Adding a rustic, trattoria glass of tummy-warming aglianico red wine from Napoli and a slice or two of toasted bruschetta and garlic pugliese; and maybe a garlicky-assertive cesar to the picture is truly angelic.

Afterward, combine some of that aglianico with warm, flourless belgian chocolate cake and a bittersweet espresso and you'll be enjoying your own holy trinity.

Well, while this writer, and your host/chef may be catholic, it is this passion for simple and honest flavors that is what La Tavolata is all about.

La Tavolata was created to provide a simple and honest venue to provide an Italian specialy- fresh pasta - with several antipasti, insalate, meat, seafood and vegetarian entrees to complement. Though fresh pasta is the main attraction, just as much care and passion goes into all other dishes.

La Tavolata resembles a typical Italian trattoria, or osteria. It is small (12 tables) and is owner-driven. There are no constantly changing managers. The owners are line cooking, prepping, ordering and procuring ingredients themselves. All of the pasta dough itself is made the same week you eat it. The tortellini, gnocchi, cannelloni and manicotti are all handmade and house made. Our tiramisu, cakes and tarts are also made in house, of course. The owners and staff absolutely do care that every customer receives satisfaction.

La Tavolata was created to provide trattoria-authentic prices, just as in Italy, where ristoranti are significantly more expernsive. Our food and wine prices are about half of "trattoria" prices in west LA, for instance, where wine by the glass prices start in double digits, and pasta prices start above $16, for tiny plates. It is very difficult to find any bottle of wine in west LA in a casual trattoria for under $30. We try to find interesting wines, and price almost all of them under $30.

Bill Johnston and John Huson, owner and owner/chef have been cooking pasta since John's first trattoria in the North Beach area of San Francisco in 1979, and then Trattoria Limone in Long Beach. We are happy to be providing value, flavor and happiness at La Tavolata since June, 2011. We hope you take a look at our menu and beverages on this site and come visit us. It is our pleasure and our wonderful staff's pleasure to serve you.
